Letters From England:
A few days ago, on the Idea Factory, I posted about a movie idea I have about set in Liverpool England called Scousers. Here’s another idea I have about England.
Where The Idea Came From:
Letters from England has been in my head for some time. I had always been a fan of funny raw truthful adolescent movies, such as Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Breakfast Club and Risky Business. There were also a television series I enjoyed, over here called, The Wonder Years and a Brit series, I liked called “The Inbetweeners. It was those two series, that had me take a look my five years in England. Only two of those years were spent in my early adoloscence, but I had some interesting experiences to form what might be an interesting series.
When you are living through Adolescence, it can seem a little overdramatic. Once you’ve had some time to look back on it, all those strange things you did as a teen, can be pretty funny.
The Premise:
The Premise is pretty simple, take an American Family and move them to England and now the two kids in the family are forced to learn a new culture. This can lead to a whole host of humorous incidents, involving custom, language confusion and a myriad of other strange episodes that can occur. I decided the teleplay would be called Letters from England, because I had a friend in the states who I wrote to about some of my adventures while living there.
The Episodes:
I was amazed at what came out of my head from five years of living in England, I had a ton of ideas to draw back on, not all of it came from my adolescence, but some of the stories could be told from the eyes of a teenager rather than a pre-teen. I also have a whole host of colorful characters to draw on. I had a cross country race story, I have an episode about learning to play English Football, an episode where the main character gets locked in a train bathroom and his stop is coming up. I also have some other interesting episodes involving the parents. I haven’t quite come up with the Pilot yet, but that is in the works.
The Script is the thing
